Teddy Riley, the creator of the new jack swing officially announces the death of the aforementioned current in 1994 coinciding with the birth of hip-hop-soul, also called heavy R&B and quite simply R&B or contemporary RnB (the term RnB being synonymous with Afro popular music -American in the United States) or hip-hop / RnB.

RnB is a musical style created above all to make people dance, even if there are also a lot of ballads.

The RnB is preceded by the new jack swing and even before, by the urban in the 1980s, the latter term also being still used in the United States to designate this musical genre. Since 1990, the RnB is notably influenced by artists such as R. Kelly (also nicknamed King of RnB) who, by his numerous ballads and his songs in the form of gospel one of the founders of this new genre which goes to its third decade.

RnB is not, however, part of the hip-hop movement, rappers often invite female singers to interpret their choruses in their songs, and these are launched solo (a fine example is that of Ashanti). There are more female singers than male singers in the RnB. Many singers are influenced by the Girl Power movement (Mary J. Blige, Beyoncé, etc.). The way of singing RnB comes directly from soul music and gospel.

RnB invents its own style, and thereafter rap uses RnB style music (Ja Rule for example). It is difficult to catalog certain rap or RnB artists (Black Eyed Peas, Eve, Lauryn Hill).

The first RnB song would be Rock With You by Michael Jackson released in 1978

Kelly with I Believe I Can Fly, Blackstreet with No Diggity, En Vogue with Don't Let Go (Love), Usher with U Make Me Wanna, Shola Ama with You're the One I Love) but also Toni Braxton with his hit Un-Break My Heart.

The RnB ballads are called "slow jams" (whose origin is the kind quiet storm of Smokey Robinson, Luther Vandross and the Isley Brothers). Some artists specialize in this style such as Brian McKnight, Babyface, Jagged Edge, 112, Gerald Levert, Dru Hill, Keith Sweat or Joe. Some songs by Usher and R. Kelly also come in this radio format.
